Super Typhoon "Sura", the ninth super typhoon in 2023, strongly hit the coastal areas of Guangdong, with the typhoon centre passing through Hong Kong waters at a distance of 10 nautical miles to the south at its closest point and with a wind force of force 16, the stormy sea and huge waves hit the Hong Kong area hard.
Under the influence of super typhoon "Sura", the Hong Kong Observatory hoisted typhoon signal No. 3 at 1540 on 31 August; the Tugboat Department sent the tugboat "HAI MAN" to the North Anchorage on Lamma Island with a stern cable to guard the anchorless vessel "GIYAS". GIYAS", ready for rescue. At 02:40 on 1 September , Hong Kong Observatory hoisted typhoon signal No. 8. The Tugboat Department deployed an additional tugboat of 5,000 HP "HAI LIK" to the North Lamma Anchorage with a bowline to guard the anchor-handling vessel "GIYAS". At 18:20 On 1 September, the Hong Kong Observatory hoisted typhoon signal No. 9, and the Tugboat Department deployed another 5,000 HP tugboat to guard the large vessel "GIYAS". 2015 Hong Kong Observatory hoisted Typhoon Signal No. 10. At 03:40 On 2 September, Hong Kong Observatory changed to wind signal No. 8 and then to wind signal No. 3 in the afternoon. The tugboat returned to the company after completing the guarding task.
In the afternoon of 1st September, YIU LIAN Tugboat Department received a notice from the ship owner that the unmanned barge "China Harbour FTB-16" had anchored and shifted to the shore near the shallows in Hei Ling Chau Typhoon Shelter and needed tugboat rescue, so the Tugboat Dept. arranged the 4,000 HP tugboat "HAI AN" to go to the rescue site quickly. At 16:50 on 1st September, "HAI AN" arrived at the side of the unmanned barge, moved it to a safe position, and guarded it against the wind and waves. During the period of guarding, two other unmanned barges nearby also appeared to anchor and quickly shifted to the shore, "HAI AN" and rescue the two unmanned barges nearby to a safe position until the super typhoon completely passed.
As Super Typhoon "Sura" moved away from Hong Kong and the wind weakened, the guarding and rescue tugs returned to the Company's terminal after completing their work safely.
